DeVon Davis (Vonnie) Mellinger, 91, of Burlington, Iowa, died at his home on Thursday, November 27, 2014.
Born on November 12, 1923 in Pleasant Grove, Iowa, he was the son of James and Ella Davis Mellinger. He married Grace Mehaffy on October 3, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. They were married for 72 years.
Mel was a World War II Army veteran and saw action in the European Theater.
He worked for the Mason Hanger Co at IAAP, retiring after 40 years as Mechanical Supervisor.
He was a member of Masonic Des Moines Lodge #1 and Kabba Shrine, Moose Club, Eagles Club, V.F.W. and 50 year member of Ducks Unlimited. He loved hunting, fishing and the Mississippi River. Mel and Grace took several boat trips into the Upper Mississippi and the St. Croix Rivers. He was involved in stock car racing as a driver in the late ’40s and early ‘50s. He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; one sister, Annette Peart of Bettendorf, Iowa; and one brother, Robert (Bonnie) Davis of LaFeria, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Per Vonnie’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the loving care of Prugh Funeral Service. Masonic Services will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. . Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established for the Special Needs Foundation. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
