Funeral Arrangements for Retired Publisher of German Paper Not Complete

Carl Lohmann, 87, retired publisher of the German newspaper, Volksfreund-Tribune, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nettie Marquardt, 2305 Gnahn street, with whom he had been making his home for the past several years, at 10:30 yesterday morning (May 29, 1933).

Besides his publishing work Mr. Lohmann taught school, served as police clerk, and operated a job printing shop at various times during his long residence in the city. Twelve years ago he fractured his hip in a fall and not long afterward he retired. He was hampered somewhat by this injury but his health was comparatively good until the past two weeks.

Born In Germany

Mr. Lohmann was born in Ottenstein Germany, October 17, 1845, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lohmann.

He completed his university training in the old country and came to America when he was 19 years old. He arrived in New York, November 7, 1864, the day Lincoln was reelected and the celebration in honor of that event made a lasting impression on him.

Going immediately to the home of friends at Franklin in Lee county [Iowa], he spent his first winter there, coming to Burlington the following spring. He was teacher of German in the school then conducted by First Evangelical church here and also taught two years at Ft. Madison and in the public schools of Burlington. He also operated a private school here for several years.

Mr. Lohmann's marriage to Dorothy Shaper (sic) of Burlington took place November 1, 1865, the year after his arrival here. His parents and brothers and sisters also came to Burlington in that year.

Founded Newspaper

Mr. Lohmann and his brother, Henry, and two sons, Charles H. and Wm. C.. founded the German news paper Volksfreunde, Charles and Henry later withdrawing from the enterprise. Carl Lohmann and his son, Will, continued in the business and in 1899 bought the Iowa Tribune, a German language daily, and consolidated the two papers into the Volksfreunde-Tribune. They also operated a job printing shop in connection with the paper. In 1920 they discontinued publication of the newspaper but Mr. Lohmann continued to operate the job shop with his son, Henry, under the firm name of Lohmann and Son.

Active in several fraternal organizations for a number of years, Mr. Lohmann discontinued his memberships his declining years. He had lived in the same neighborhood on Ash street most of the time since he came to Burlington. He and his wife made their home with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Marquardt, for a number of years. Mrs. Lohmann died eight years ago and for the past several years, Mr. Lohmann had been living at the home of Mrs. Nettie Marquardt.
