Pauline Ruth (Burgus) Kester

Pauline Ruth Burgus Kester, 86, of rural Burlington, passed away on November 20th, 2014 at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab. Born June 30th, 1928 in rural Sperry, she was the daughter of Herbert Charles and Daisy Esther Marshall Burgus. On October 12, 1947, she married Wayne Kester at Sperry. He died Nov. 27, 2002.
Pauline graduated from Sperry High School and worked at the Des Moines County Courthouse before becoming a busy farm wife, helping her husband with all aspects of the farm. She was a talented musician, especially known for playing the piano. She played for dances, receptions, church services, and weekly at the Steamboat Senior Center. She served on the Des Moines County Extension Council, was a past member of Latty United Church, and a current member of Sperry United Methodist Church and the UMW. She enjoyed the Friendly Neighbors' Club and Ladies in Stitches. She and Wayne loved to dance and were members of the Eagles, the Moose, VFW, and were R.S.V.P. volunteers. She was a 37 year cancer survivor, and participated in Relay for Life with her Sperry Church team. She enjoyed music, cooking and baking, sewing, volunteering at church, and being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Gary (Nancy) Kester and Brian Kester, both of Burlington; two daughters, Linda (Tom) Jones of Burlington and Debra (Harold) Irwin of West Burlington; Six grandchildren, Megan Jones-Williams, Nathan Jones, Kevin Irwin, Jo Kester, Emily Borrison, and Conner Kester; 4 great-grandchildren - Landry Jones, Kamden Borrison, and Mel and Ella Williams, one sister, LaVera Gerst, sister-in-law Hazel Burgus, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Harold and Jim, and sister Dorothy Crow.
The funeral service for Pauline Kester will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 25th, in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Jeff Kodis will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Monday, November 24th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
Memorials have been established for Hope Haven and Sperry United Methodist Church.
