Samuel Charles Thie, 97, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis.
Born Oct. 23, 1916, on the family farm near Mediapolis, he was the son of Samuel and Ruby Young Thie. On June 17, 1943, he married Phyllis Madden in Hamilton, Bermuda. They later divorced. On Oct. 12, 1972, he married Lora Elliot in Wapello. She died Feb. 14, 2010.Mr. Thie was a farmer west of Mediapolis, worked at IRC in Burlington, was a real estate agent for Realty World in Mena, Ark., and was mayor of Hatfield, Ark.
He graduated from Mediapolis High School as salutatorian of his class and graduated from Burlington Junior College in 1938. After retiring from farming, he and his wife moved to Arkansas and returned to the Mediapolis area in 1995.
He was a first sergeant in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Bermuda during World War II in the 423rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion.
He was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church and Des Moines County Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, especially roses and irises, and taking floral arrangements to church.
Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Reynolds of Somonauk, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Linda Dotson of Wapello and Jeanie Kaszubski of New Lonox, Ill.; one son, Bernard Thie of Mediapolis; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Hugo Thie of Mediapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Per his wishes, there will be a private family remembrance. His body has been cremated and entrusted to Hagele and Honts Funeral Home.
