Born in Ft. Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Fred William and Nellie Derr Ried. On Aug. 27, 1977, he married Victoria Ried in Burlington, Iowa. She later died. He married Susann McMillan on Dec. 24, 2004, in Durham. Mr. Ried worked for JI Case for 30 yrs. He served in the US Air Force as a sergeant in Vietnam from July of 1966 until July 1970. He was a member of the VFW, was proud of his Native American heritage and being a Vietnam veteran and serving his country. He loved Iowa, fishing, hunting, leisure time with his friends, and the outdoors. As a child he used to rescue hawks, nurse them back to health and then release them.
