Jerry Ray Adams, 73, of Burlington, died at his home in Burlington, Iowa on Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Born on August 21, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Raymond E. and Ruth Marie Bertlshofer Adams. He married Angela Ann Morgan on August 15, 1971 in Burlington, Iowa.

Jerry graduated from Burlington High School and the University of Iowa. He owned and operated the Sombrero for 25 years with his father, was a sales manager for Westland Ford, and managed Flint Hills Golf Course for 8 years before retirement.

He participated in the R.O.T.C. and served with the National Guard.

He was a member of SS John & Paul Catholic Church.

Jerry attended the Republican National Convention and was a delegate forRonald Reagan in 1980. He was very active in the Des Moines County Republican Party. He was a devoted Cub fan, a voracious reader, sometimes reading a book a day. He was an amateur photographer and enjoyed developing his pictures. He served on the Burlington Library Board and was a long-time president of the Heritage Hill Association. Jerry was a member of the Delta Epsilon Fraternity at the University of Iowa. He founded the Sombrero Open, the largest one-day golf tournament in Iowa at the time. He is a member of the Burlington Golf Club. He was devoted to his loving wife and his Wire Fox Terrier “Holly.” Jerry was known for his stories and told the best jokes.

He is survived by his wife; one foster son, Long (Dianne) Nguyen, three foster grandchildren, Daniel, Derek & Dustin Nguyen all of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Pamela (Edward) Wilson of Sperry, IA & Julie (Keith) Vaupel of Galesburg, Il; nieces and nephews, Jill Hirte, Brandon Wilson, Anthony & Clinton Vaupel & Myranda Vaupel Dixon, Elizabeth Toal Anderson, Benjamin Toal, Morgan Toal, Rachel Morgan Walsh, Sarah Morgan Berryman, Elizabeth Morgan Eckhardt,

Celeste Morgan Yaluk and Emily Morgan Jones. Several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Michael Wilson

The Funeral Mass for Jerry Adams will be held in St. Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Fr. Marty Goetz will officiate. Cremation will be entrusted to Prugh’s following the service. Interment will be in Sacred Heat Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends in Prugh Chapel on Wednesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m.

In Lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the Notre Dame Foundation, Heritage Trust North Hill Fountain Project and Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Association.
