Vernard Rayburn

Vernard L. “Bud” Rayburn, 84, of Burlington died at 1:45 p. m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Roy and Vivian Rayburn. He married Clara Stamper

Mr. Rayburn was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was past commander of VFW Post 9162 of West Burlington. He was an auto mechanic, working at various places, including Thomas Motors and NAPA Auto Parts.

Mr. Rayburn enjoyed fishing, going to the casino, his pet, “Chloe” and spending time with his family. When his daughter was a Girl Scout leader, he supported her troop as their chaperone and chauffeur and was named the first honorary Girl Scout.

Survivors include his wife of Burlington; four daughters, Betty Thomson of Dodgeville, and Sadie Pindell, Mary Johnson and Regina Magnuson, all of Burlington; one son, Roy Rayburn of LaHarpe, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Ray burn will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Kirk Bennett officiating, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Military rites will be conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Burial will be in North Walker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
