Richard Mapel
Richard "Dick" Neil Mapel, 61, of Danville, died at 1:27 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born April 2, 1942, in Burlington, he was the son of LaMar and Lois Wagner Mapel. On June 16, 1961, he married Carolyn Shumaker in Danville.
Mr. Mapel was superintendent of secondary roads for Des Moines County since 1992. He farmed in rural Danville until 1996.
He was a 1960 graduate of Danville High School. He was a member of Danville United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 48 AF&AM of Danville, Danville Telephone Co. board of directors for several years, Jaggar Cemetery board of directors, Danville Township trustee, former 4-H leader and recipient of the Gary Wagner Land Stewardship Award.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Tammy Underwood of Grants Pass, Ore., Kimberly Schenk of Burlington and Amy Mapel of West Burlington; three grandchildren; his mother of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Martha Jane Jurrema of Hot Springs, Ark.; and one brother, David Mapel of Danville.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Masonic rites will be conducted at 6 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Mapel will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with the Revs. Jack Wolgamuth and Richard Latta officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in rural Danville.
Memorials have been established for Danville Rescue Squad and University of Iowa Ophthalmology Department.
