Lala "Helen" Diewold, 88, of Burlington, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Klein Center of Great River Medical Center.

Born December 16, 1911, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Jesse Herbert and LaVerna Margaret Huston Hartman. On October 2, 1934, she married Lawrence Matthew Diewold in Burlington. He died July 17, 1981.

Mrs. Diewold and her husband operated D & R Amusement Company, the Maple Leaf Tavern, and the Iowa Hotel in downtown Burlington.

She was a member of Saints John & Paul Catholic Church, Moose Lodge Auxiliary, Elks Club Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles Club Auxiliary and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. While in California, she was a member of the Navy League Club, Monday Club, Yacht Club and Port Huememe Club. She was an avid world traveler. She would spend six months in Burlington and six months in Port Huememe, California.

Survivors include two brothers, Herbert S. Hartman and Kenneth Neal Hartman, both of Burlington; one sister, Audrey B. Walker of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
