Gladdis Holsteen Gaines, 93, of Fairfield, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at her home.
Born Jan. 26, 1909, in Spring Grove, she was the daughter of Harry George and Nellie May Smith Holsteen. She married Dean S. Gaines Sept. 13, 1931, in Cheyenne, Wyo. He died Aug. 23, 1994.
She spent her childhood days in Yarmouth. During her freshman year of high school, she and her family moved to Danville, where she graduated in 1927 graduate from Danville High School. She was a state of Iowa licensed cosmetologist for 10 years.
Mrs. Gaines and her husband, Dean, owned and operated the Gaines Jewelry Store in Burlington from 1931 until 1956. They moved to Fairfield in August 1989.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Ullemeyer of Rock Island, Ill.; one son, Mort Gaines of Fairfield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Hawley of Hemet, Calif.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and five sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.
The funeral for Mrs. Gaines will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Dave Peterson officiating. The graveside committal service will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
