Ethel Stumpf
Ethel M. Stumpf, 95, of Burlington, died at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 9, 1912, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna M. Orth Brust. In 1936, she married John Riffel in Burlington. He died in 1963. On Aug. 14, 1971, she married Clarence W. Stumpf in Delmar. He died in 2002.

Mrs. Stumpf was a bookkeeper at the Hawkeye Gazette for 12 years and at Burlington Municipal Waterworks for 30 years. She retired in 1972. She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing cards and baking. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include one sister, Kathleen R. Garnant of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Nancy A. Stanbary of St. Charles, Ill., Sheryl Thogerson of Davis, Ill.; three stepgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. today at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends following a 6 p.m. rosary service. She has been cremated. The memorial Mass of the resurrection for Mrs. Stumpf will be at 10 a.m. Friday at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with the Revs. David G. Steinle and Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church.
