The body of Alan Lee Bonar, 19, was found Tuesday night at his home at 1107 W. Hempstead, four days after he had taken his own life.
Death was caused by suffocation, Dr. C.F. Watson, Jefferson County medical examiner, said Bonar tied a plastic bag over his head after going to bed. The time of his death was placed at 11 p.m. last Friday.
The young man lived alone. Neighbors found his body Tuesday at 5:09 p.m.
Private graveside services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Arrangements are in charge of the Raymond Funeral Home.
Bonar was employed at the Crane and Monorail System Division of Acco. He was a 1973 graduate of Fairfield High School where he lettered in football, wrestling and track. He was also track manager for both the boys and girls squads and a member of Hi-Y and 4-H.
Bonar was counselor of the Fairfield DeMolay chapter and a member of the 8 o'clock worship committee at the First United Methodist Church. He was born Nov. 1, 1953 in Burlington, the son of Ervin and Anita Rutherford Bonar.
Surviving are his father of Fairfield Route 2, his mother of Muscatine, and two brothers, Ronald of Des Moines and Gary of Muscatine. A grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Rutherford, West Burlington, also survives.
