Jon Elwyn Edwards, 87, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Bettendorf, Clear Lake, Northwood, Rochelle, Ill., and West Burlington, died at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born March 10, 1915, in Sperry, he was the son of John William and Myrtle Mae Prettyman Edwards. He married Genevieve May Kremer on Aug. 4, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died Jan. 10, 1989.
Mr. Edwards was a 1933 graduate of Lone Tree High School and a 1947 gradu ate of Iowa Wesleyan College. He did graduate work at Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Iowa universities. He served as a staff sergeant in the Army Medical Corps during World War II.
He taught in public grade and high schools in Iowa and Illinois for 38 years, retiring in 1977, and was a substitute teacher during his retirement.
He and his wife were professional musicians and for several years and many summers they traveled the United States, entertaining as a duo. They were known professionally as The Kay Edwards Duo and performed mainly on the piano and electric organ and accordian.
He was of the Methodist faith and attended First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.
Survivors include one stepson, B. Maynard Kremer of Lisle, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Muriel Headly of Bettendorf and Marianne Hillier of Galesburg, Ill.; step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carole Doan White of Mount Pleasant and Mary Menzer of Lone Tree.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one stepson, one stepdaughter, three sisters and two brothers.
There will be no visitation.
The graveside funeral service for Mr. Edwards will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Burlington Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating.
