The Hawk Eye, Sunday, April 5, 1998; Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa:

Harry D. Hatt, 81, of Burlington, died at 6:24 p.m. Monday, March 30, 1998, at Burlington Care Center, Burlington.

Born October 18, 1916, in Iowa City, he was the son of Alexander H. and Elizabeth Tice Hatt. On October 25, 1936, he married Dorothy Manley in Ottumwa. She died September 25, 1985.

Mr. Hatt graduated from Marion High School in Marion. He took a youth course at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, so he could be a scout leader. He taught crafts and nature at Camp Waubek for four years. He then worked in Fairfield as an apprentice pattern-maker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Due to injuries sustained in the war, he and his wife moved to Burlington, where he began making shell jewelry, which was sold to Cliff House in San Francisco, California, Kansas City, and Brooklyn, New York. He served as fire department secretary in Burlington for five years, and, in 1951, he was commissioner of Burlington Parks. He retired as Superintendent of Parks in Burlington, a position he held for 17 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, VFW Post No. 10102, Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, all of Burlington, D.A.V., and Jr. Chamber of Commerce and Order of the Purple Heart.

Survivors include one son, Michael Hatt of Bloomingdale, Illinois; two daughters, Judy Gall and Denise Hatt, both of Burlington; foster son, Walter Peszulik of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John A. Hatt of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Jean MacArthur of San Bernardino, California; nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, four brothers and three sisters.

The family will receive friends following a Christian wake at 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral for Mr. Hatt will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Burlington, with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 10101.

A memorial has been established for Burlington City Parks Department.
