Peter Joseph Zachmeyer, 41, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at his home.

Born August 29, 1966, in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was the son of James W. and Mary Louise Knight Zachmeyer.

Mr. Zachmeyer was a veterinary technician fo All Pets Veterinary Clinic. Peter graduated from Southeastern Community College with Associates Degrees in Criminal Justice and the Arts in 2004. Peter then entered the Veterinary Assistant program at Kirkwood Community College, where he graduated with honors in 2006. Staff Sargeant Zachmeyer was a Military Policeman with the United States Marine Corps, where he served for nine years, during that time he was stationed in Japan, Guam, Kuwait and Iraq. He enjoyed learning new things and being around animals. Peter was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Jordan Lynn Zachmeyer and Kirby Caroline Zachmeyer, both of Raleigh, North Carolina; his mother Mary of Norfolk, Nebraska; two brothers, James Zachmeyer of Burlington and Mark Zachmeyer of Norfolk; two sisters, Kristine Zachmeyer of Norfolk and Theresa Zachmeyer of Mt. Pleasant; one niece, Jamie Michelle Johnson of Burlington; and one nephew, Ryan Allen Kreiger of Mt. Pleasant.

Peter was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Rev. Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial with full graveside military rites conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
