Aven Coberley

Aven Dee Coberley, 81, of New London, died at 11:04 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 19, 1921, in Jamesport, Mo., he was the son of Christopher L. and Bertha M. Bolander Coberley. On April 26, 1941, he married Kathryn Beck in Yarmouth.

Mr. Coberley managed Farmers Union in Mount Pleasant, Des Moines County Farm Service Co. of Danville for 14 years and New London Farmers Co-Op for 14 years. He was an attendant at Elliott Chapel in New London for 17 years.

He was a 1939 graduate of Yarmouth High School. He was a World War II Army veteran and Army Air Corps veteran. He attended flight cadet training at A&M University in Stillwater, Okla., and later was a sergeant clerk in General McArthur's headquarters in Manila, Philippines.

He was a member of New London United Methodist Church and the Fun & Fellowship Group of the church. He served on the volunteer fire departments in Danville and New London and was mayor of Danville for three years. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed metal detecting, woodworking and games.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ronald Coberley of New London; one daughter, Barbara Byrd of New London; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, J.L. Coberley of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

Visitation will begin after noon Tuesday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Coberley will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial with military rites by VFW Post 2561, American Legion Post 58, AMVETS Post 44 and Honor Guard will be in Trinity Cemetery, south of Mount Union.

A memorial has been established for New London United Methodist Church.
