Ted Davis, Second Lieutenant, Army Air Force, Killed in plane crash in Italy, June 20, 1944 – Ted Davis, son of Theodore Davis of Mediapolis, was born April 30, 1919. He attended Mediapolis Consolidated School, graduating with the class of 1936. Later he attended Iowa State College at Ames for two years.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, Dec. 29, 1941 and received his wings and commission at Midland, TX, Sep. 16, 1943. He went overseas in February of this year and was known to have made a number of missions over enemy targets in Europe.

Wednesday morning, July 12, the telegram came to his father stating that he had been killed June 20, 1944 in a plane crash in Italy. No other details have been received since other than a letter from the war department, which contained the same information.

Surviving besides the father, are three sisters, Mrs. Hugh Jamison, Mediapolis, Mrs. Willis Percy, Des Moines, and Mrs. Max VanNice, Columbus Junction.

Lt. Ted Davis Was Air Medal Winner – A news release from headquarters, Mediterranean Allied Air Forces, evidently prepared before the death in a plane crash in Italy, June 20, 1944, of Lt. Ted Davis, and delayed in transmission, states that Lt. Davis had been awarded the Air Medal. The complete release follows: Fifteenth AAF in Italy – Second Lieutenant Theodore E. Davis, 25, son of Theodore A. Davis of Mediapolis, IA, now serving as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator, has been awarded the Air Medal.

"Lt. Davis came to Italy last February. In this time he has flown 17 combat missions. He has seen action over France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Rumania and Yugoslavia.

"In civilian life Lt. Davis graduated from Mediapolis High School and prior to his entry into the service, Dec. 30, 1941, he was a student at Iowa State College.
