DEATH TAKES G. A. NEWBY, 85

Rites Tuesday for Former Constable and Mississippi River Purser

Gabriel A., Newby, 605 Hedge avenue, former constable and a resident of Burlington 45 years, died at his home Sunday afternoon following a week's illness with a heart ailment.

Once a purser aboard the "Eloise", plying between Keokuk and Burlington, he never lost his interest in the Mississippi and could tell many interesting stories of the era when passengers still made inter-city trips via the river boats.

Born in Lee county, neat Ft. Madison, Sept. 25, 1854, he was 85 at the time of his death. In early life he was a school teacher in both Lee County and in Henderson County, Illinois.

He was married March 17, 1896, to Emma A. Burke. He served eight years as a constable before retirement in 1933.

Mr. Newby was a member of First Christian church in which he was active of Hawkeye Natives society and Woodmen of the World lodge.

Surviving are his widow; a daughter, Mrs. George Zackert, Burlington, and a grandson, Firson L. Zackert of this city.

Funeral services will be held at First Christian church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, preceded by rites at the Burnett-Wallen funeral home at 1:30. The Rev. W. B. Slater, pastor of First Christian church, will conduct services and interment will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
