Walter Carl Mewes, 93, of Burlington, died at 4:50 PM Thursday, February 21, 2008, at Burlington Care Center.

Born Saturday, September 5, 1914, in Burlington, he was the son of John and Dora Miller Mewes. He married Cathryn Schiedman in 1937. She died in 1941. On December 8, 1945, he married Maxine Helen Gerber in Burlington.

Walter was employed as a layout metal worker in the Experimental Department for J. I. Case Co. for 38 plus years. He retired in 1980. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #568 and United Auto Workers Local #807. He enjoyed woodworking, birds, playing cards, visiting with friends and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two sons, Dale (Gail) Mewes of San Diego, CA, and Gary (Mel) Mewes of Grand Terrace, CA; one daughter, Marilyn (Robert) Clark of Knoxville, IA; 11 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, Gertude Stevens of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, six nephews and two nieces.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 3:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 24 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Mewes will be 10:00 AM Monday, February 25, 2008, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.
