George Howe
George A. "Jerry" Howe, 68, of Burlington, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 22, 1939, in Burlington, he was the son of Marion and Laurada Moser Howe. On July 26, 1958, he married Nancy P. Walker in Burlington.

Mr. Howe was an ironworker, retiring in 1992. He was a graduate of Huron High School in Oakville. He was in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving in Desert Storm with a rank of First Sergeant. He retired from the military in June 1999 after 26 years of service and was a hunter safety instructor.

Mr. Howe was a member and deacon of Danville First Baptist Church. He was a member of National Rifle Association, Ironworker Union 577 and New London Country Club.

He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening, gun collecting, gun smithing, shopping, traveling, fishing and going to auctions.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Howe of Quincy, Ill.; two daughters, Shelly Waterman of Burlington and Marcy Carl of Liberty, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his father of Kingston; and three brothers, Delbert Howe of Danville, Ervin Howe of Kingston and Harry Howe of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Military Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

His body will be cremated following the visitation.

The memorial service for Mr. Howe will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Baker officiating. A luncheon will follow.

Memorials have been established for Danville First Baptist Church and Great River Medical Center Hospice House.
