George Cleland

George M. Cleland Sr., 93, of Mediapolis, died at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 12, 1914, in Thornberg, he was the son of Ray and Margaret Molyneux Cleland. On Dec. 25, 1934, he married Helen E. Baugher in Danville. She died Aug. 1, 1991. In December 1992, he married Neva Clark. She died in June 2001.

Mr. Cleland was a farmer and was a fireman in the boiler room at J.I. Case. He worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Burlington Northern Railway and General Electrical. He was a graduate of What Cheer High School.

He was a member of Mediapolis United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling, horse racing -- especially sulky horse racing, gardening and watching football.

Survivors include one son, George "Jim" M. Cleland Jr. of Burlington; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The private funeral for Mr. Cleland will be Wednesday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Kodis officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural West Burlington.

A memorial has been established for Mediapolis United Methodist Church.
