Sharon Getchell

Sharon Kay Getchell, 4, 1022 N. 8th, died in Mercy hospital Friday, the victim of acute Lymphatic lukemia(SIC).

The little girl who had suffered from the disease since summer of 1953, first drew public attention when she was allowed to spend Christmas at home with her brothers and a sister although seriously stricken with the disease.

On Mar. 27, she celebrated her 4th birthday, which doctors thought would be her last.

The little girl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Getchell and was first hospitalized at Mercy hospital, Dec. 16, 1953 for observation and treatment. Treatment of the disease which consists of blood transfusions and injection and injection of life-sustaining drugs, was further complicated by the child's rare blood type.

Sharon Getchell was born in Burlington, Mar. 27, 1950, the daughter of Harold and Mary Getchell. She was a member of the First E.&R. church.

Surviving are her parents: a sister, Wanda Marie, and two brothers, Philip and Melvin, all at home; her grandfather, Fred Pomeroy, Dodge City, Kan., and her grandmother, Mrs. Clara M. Getchell, Burlington, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held in Prugh's chapel, Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Schulz in charge. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
