Edith Jarvis Alden

Word has been received here of the death Sept. 25 of Burlington native Edith Jarvis Alden, 96, at Samarkand retirement home, Santa Barbara, Calif.

She was born here May 10,1884. She moved to Santa Barbara in 1976.

Mrs. Alden began working for the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad(now the Burlington Northern)during WWI. in 1935 she was elected CB&Q secretary and assistant treasurer, becoming the woman ever to hold a corporate office with a major US railroad.

She was president of the American Council of Railroad Women in 1953, was past president of Altrusa club, Chicago chapter; and was a member of the Alliance of Business and Professional Women and the PEO sisterhood.

Surviving: a son, John, Santa Barbara, and three grandchildren.

In accordance with Mrs. Alden's wishes. there were no local services.
