Vera Irene Mathews, 97, of Danville, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at her son's home in Danville.

Born Oct. 3, 1910, in Lee County, she was the daughter of David Walter and Lydia Norberg Stevenson. On Jan. 9, 1937, she married Ralph E. Mathews in Denmark. He died in 1978.

Mrs. Mathews was a school teacher and homemaker. She also worked for her husband as bookkeeper at Mathews Implement. She was a 1929 graduate of Denmark Academy and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught at Peachblow School in Lee County. She was a member of the Des Moines County Cancer Board, Entre Nous Club and Danville Garden Club. She was a member of Danville Congregational Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing. She loved to write and enjoyed her coffee group.

Survivors include one son, Donald Mathews of Danville; three grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Mathews will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel with the Rev. Barbara Koenig officiating. Burial will be at Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

A memorial has been established.
