Delmer Smith

Delmer Marion Smith, 86, 1741 Louisa St., died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1992, at Burlington Medical Center.

Born March 31, 1906, on a farm near Mount Union, he was the son of Francis Marion and Esther Funk Smith. He married Ethel K. Schofield of Morning Sun, Aug. 2, 1936 at Quincy, Ill.

He was a 1923 graduate of Mount Union High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. While in college, he was active in music, playing in the college orchestra and band and in the Mount Pleasant City Band.

He and his wife enjoyed fishing, relaxation, entertaining and gardening at their summer home on the Mississippi near Gladstone, Ill. They also enjoyed growing and sharing their roses with others.

He moved to Burlington in 1936 and started working for Stang Engineering Company July 1, 1937. When the business was sold to Yetter Oil Company in 1955, Mr. Smith joined that firm. He was secretary of the company when he retired in 1971.

In 1939, he started taking flying lessons from the late Art Hartman Flying Service. When World War II started, he joined the Civil Air Patrol and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He was a member of the former Burlington Flying Club, First Congregational Church of Burlington, AARP, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and was a 50-year-plus member of UCT.

Survivors include his wife; six nephews and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Visitation will be from 7 tp 8:30 p.m. tonight at Lunning Chapel.

The funeral for Mr. Smith will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. William Trump officiating. Burial will be in Companion Gardens at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the First Congregational Church and the Parkinson's Research Association.
