Melva Schmeiser

Melva Catherine Schmeiser, 88, of Burlington, died at 4:42 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 8, 1915, in Wever, she was the daughter of George and Anna Sourwine Miller. She married Wilfred B. Schmeiser on June 1, 1939, at her parents' home, 1210 Summer St., in Burlington.

Mrs. Schmeiser was a 1933 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a homemaker and also helped her husband on the farm.

She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and Farm Bureau. She was a deaconess and sang in the choir at Grace United Methodist Church and taught and sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church. She sang at nursing homes and funerals.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Marvin Lee Schmeiser of Antigo, Wis., and Stanley LeRoy Schmeiser of West Des Moines; two daughters, Elaine Ann Patkus of Decatur, Ill., and Connie Kay Bell of Burlington; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Elting of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Schmeiser will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Tim Stark and Tyrone Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Old Stone Cemetery in Sperry.

A memorial has been established.
