Gladys Bigger

Gladys M. Bigger, 60 of Media, Ill. died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 1996 at her home, following an extended illness.

Born Feb. 10, 1936 in Burlington, she was the daughter of William and Esther Brookhiser Wilson. She married James Bigger on July 31, 1965 in Burlington.

Mrs. Bigger was a 1954 graduate of Stronghurst High School in Stronghurst, Ill. She worked as head nurse at Burlington Hospital for several years. She served as coordinator of the Practical School of Nursing at Burlington Community College and as freshman class coordinator for Burlington Hospital School of Nursing. She was the health occupations instructor at LaHarpe High School from 1972-1974 and started the Health Occupations class of Southern High School of Stronghurst, which she had taught for 22 years. She also served the school district as school nurse.

She was an active worker for the Red Cross and had served as president of District 2 of Iowa Nurses Association from 1964-1965. She had been chairwoman of the Media Centennial Committee, and served as a 4-H leader.
She was a member of Media Community United Presbyterian Church, Beulah Circle, and Christian Education Committee of the church and American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her husband; one son Berry Bigger of Media, Ill.; one daughter Michelle Williams of Kirksville, Mo.; one sister Marian Hawkinson of Coal Valley, Ill.; one brother Frank Wilson of Gaston, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, Ill., where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Bigger will be 2 p.m. Friday at Media Community United Presbyterian church with the Rev. Christine Conrath officiating.
Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, near Media.

Memorials have been established for Southern High School Health Occupations Scholarship Fund and Media Community United Presbyterian church.
