Mary Uppinghouse
Mary C. Uppinghouse, 91, of Burlington died at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at Great River Klein Center.

Born March 12, 1916, in Plevna, Mo., she was the daughter of James W. and Ancile Jennings Carty. On June 18, 1940, she married David F. Uppinghouse Sr. in Warrensburg, Mo. He died in 1985.

Mrs. Uppinghouse was a restauranteur. She worked at Highway Pantry in Wapello, Wen-Mar Café in Danville, Lincolnville Café, Holiday Inn, Hotel Burlington, YWCA Cafeteria, and then Mary's Home Plate in Burlington and Danville. She also was a cook at Apollo and Oak Street schools. She was well known for her homemade treats, including her own special recipe, poppy seed salad dressing. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Ten Club in Danville.

Survivors include one son, David F. Uppinghouse Jr. of Centennial, Colo.; one daughter, M. Jane Weingart of Burlington; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one half-brother.

Visitation with family will be 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington. She has been cremated.

The funeral for Mrs. Uppinghouse will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Downing officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Forrest Grove Cemetery in Canton, Mo.

A memorial has been established.

Lunning Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
