John Diewold
John Diewold, 83, of Burlington died at 2:10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home.

Born Dec. 8, 1923, in Burlington, he was the son of Benjamin and Lillian Gooch Diewold. On Aug. 11, 1951, he married Donna Ruth Hageman. She died Oct. 25, 1996.

Mr. Diewold worked in sales and was a professional musician with his band Hi-Fi and Johny D. He was a 1941 graduate of BHS. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the European theater and was at Normandy on D-Day.

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 568, VFW Post 10102 and the Cascade Boat and Hunting Club. He was a charter member of Wedded Wheels Motorcycle Club while living in California. He was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing and hunting. He flew his own plane and enjoyed music and singing.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Barratt of Burlington; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The mass of the resurrection for Mr. Diewold will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Council.
