Phillip Wood
Phillip Grant Wood, 85, of Burlington, died at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1921, in Centerville, he was the son of George W. and Lucille Jane Wells Wood. On Dec. 16, 1946, he married Dortha Beatrice Sweeden in Centerville.

Mr. Wood was a traffic-control operator for Burlington Northern Railroad for 33 years. He served in the 10th Mountain Infantry in the Army from October 1939 to January 1946 during World War II, achieving the rank of technical sergeant.

He went to Centerville High School. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9162, where he served as chaplain for 12 years. He enjoyed snow skiing, model railroading, trains, big band music, golf and cats.

Survivors include his wife of Burlington; two sons, Craig Wood of Cedar Rapids and Steven Wood of Flagler Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Paula Mehaffy and Peggy Wilkinson, both of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8 to 11 a.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Wood will be at 11 a.m. today at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Chandar Boyle officiating. The homily will be by Coulter Wood. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Klein Center Alzheimer's Unit.
