Hugh L. Partridge, 89, of Danville died Monday, July 2, 2007, at the Danville Care Center.

Born May 3, 1918, in Dennison, he was the son of Roy Harper and Edith Newberry Partridge. On Oct. 9, 1948, he married Betty June Edwards in Fort Madison. She died Feb. 12, 1996.

Mr. Partridge owned and operated the Pro Gas Service in Danville for 37 years. He served in the Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star with combat V attachment. He attended country school in Charter Oak.

He was a member of the New London VFW Post 7641; of Danville First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon; and of Danville Fire Department where he served for 23 years. He was an honorary member for 30 years and was one of the first to become an emergency medical technician. He served on the Danville City Council and the Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce. He was co-founder of the Fort Madison Rodeo. He organized the first summer Little League in Danville. He helped build the Forest Lake Baptist Camp south of Ottumwa. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, visiting with neighborhood children and collecting canes. He was an avid gardener.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Partridge of Fairfield and Terry Partridge of St. Charles, Ill.; one daughter, Sherry Drinkall of Danville; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two half-sisters, Ethel Ghan of Springfield, Mo., and Ramona Gauthier of Kansas City, Mo.; one half-brother, Melvin Wright of Three Hills, Alberta, Canada; nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and three brothers.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel in New London, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Partridge will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Danville, with the Revs. Preston Van Loon and Harry Hollingsworth officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.

Memorials have been established for First Baptist Church of Danville and Danville Fire Department.
