Larry Avery
Larry E. Avery, 63, of Donnellson, died as a result of a traffic accident near Donnellson at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1940, near Raritan, Ill., he was the son of Joe and Nellie Wolford Avery. On Aug. 18, 1962, he married Sandra Snowden in Burlington.
Mr. Avery was a teacher in Paris, Ill., for six years and in Central Lee School District for 30 years. He coached football, basketball, baseball, and officiated track and volleyball.
He graduated from Stonghurst (Ill.) High School and Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. In 1989, he was named Iowa Coach of the Year. He led Central Lee to its first state championship in baseball. In 1999, he was inducted into the Iowa Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending antique auctions and collecting marbles. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Stacy Avery of Austin, Texas, and Kathy Jo Hoffman of Hubert, N.C.; one sister, Shirley Furniss of Media, Ill.; and two brothers, Lee Avery of Media, Ill., and Charles Avery of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Avery will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Knox officiating. Cremation will be accorded after the funeral, with a private burial in Stronghurst Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Central Lee High School baseball program.
