Helen L. Hinson, 83, of Kingston, died at 7:09 PM Monday, December 12, 2005 at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born September 17, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Samson and Mathilda Stumpf Ertz. On April 11, 1942 she married Clifford W. Hinson at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Burlington.

Helen worked for many years as a farmer’s wife. She raised four children, maintained a large garden and preserved much food by canning and later freezing. When her youngest child went to school, Helen went to work in a factory, Campbell Chain and later at IRC, to supplement the farm income. She retired from work outside her home when she was 62, but never stopped working. She had a large yard and many flowers, which she took care of personally until her illness made it impossible to continue. She was a 1940 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a life long member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society. She was an avid gardener, cake decorator, and especially loved spending time with family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Clifford; three sons, Michael (Connie) Hinson and Robert Hinson, both of Kingston, and John (Meredith) Hinson of Mediapolis; one daughter, Sandra (Dr. Stephen) Massick of Fon Du Lac, WI; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Massick, Dr. Douglas Massick, Sarah Bahr, Jacob Massick, Jason Hinson, William Hinson, Andrew Hinson, Jennifer Hinson, Brent Hinson, Katie Bartelt, and Zachary Hinson; six great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret “Peg” Geren of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Stevan, four brothers, Leo, Jim, Buddy, Tom, three sisters, Kathleen Martin, Virginia Martin, and Marian Stout.

Visitation will begin after noon, Thursday, December 15, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 9:00 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Hinson will be 10:00 AM, Friday, December 16, at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with the Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel as the celebrant and Rev. Father Dennis Martin (her nephew) as the concelebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
