Violet J. Hummel, 78, of Sunnycrest Manor, formerly of 2628 Pinard St., died Friday, March 15, 2002, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Dyersville, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dyersville Post 137. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

Mrs. Hummel worked at various offices in Dubuque and in Milwaukee.

She was born on April 5, 1923, in Dyersville, daughter of Walter and Della (Esch) Woodman. She married Vernon Hummel; he passed away in 1967.

She attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and graduated from the former Bayless Business College, Dubuque.

She was a World War II veteran and served as a medic in Navy hospitals on the East Coast and in the South.

She was formerly president of The Business and Professional Women's Club of Dubuque. She was a member of Holy Ghost Parish, The Navy Club and a former member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.

Surviving are two brothers, Walter P. Woodman, of Dubuque, and Mark Woodman Sr., of St. Catherine, Iowa; three nephews, Mark A. (Debra) Woodman, of St. Catherine, Iowa; Stan (Myra) Woodman Sr. and Walter S. Woodman, both of Dubuque; and eight great-nephews and great-nieces.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clair Woodman, in 1990.
