Burned to Death.
Manchester Press:—As we go to press, we learn the particulars of a peculiarly horrifying accident which occurred at Delhi early this morning. Mrs. Amanda Eddy, a woman about 70 years of age, has lived in Delhi for many years past, occupying a little house there, alone. Byron Stone, in passing her house on his way to the creamery, of which he has charge, about four o’clock this morning saw a light, and noticed smoke issuing from the windows. He called a neighbor, and together they managed to break into the house and smother the fire with snow. They then found Mrs. Eddy lying dead upon the floor, and most horribly burned. Near where she was found were a lamp and a can of kerosene and some kindling, as if she had attempted to build a fire on the floor. The woodwork was badly scorched and if the house had not been lined with brick it would have undoubtedly been destroyed. It was found that the unfortunate woman had gone into two separate rooms, after the fire had been communicated to her person, finally returning to the apartment where she was found.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she was born Feb. 27, 1827 and died Feb. 20, 1896. She is buried in the Upper Bay Cemetery in Delhi.
