JOHN N. PORTER OF DELHI DIES IN ARMY CAMP IN FRANCE DECEMBER 15th

John Noble Porter was born at Delhi December 3rd, 1894, and died of bronchial pneumonia December 15th, 1918, a few miles northwest of Verdun in France. He graduated from the public schools of Delhi and Strawberry Point and later studied civil engineering at Highland Park college, Des Moines. On leaving school he entered the employ of the North American Railway Construction company, where he occupied responsible positions at Des Moines and Dayton, Ohio, which he resigned in December, 1917, to enter this country's service. Being rejected from the engineers on account of defective eyesight he enlisted in the medical department where he was assigned to Field Hospital No. 42. After drilling at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, he went to France in May and was with the reserve army which struck the final blow during the last few weeks of the war. He did not join the army from love of adventure or temporary enthusiasm but from a profound sense of duty and with a clear conception of its possible cost and the sacrifice he was making.

He was of happy disposition and made friends of all with whom he came in contact whatever their age of station in life. For a long time he had been the companion of Miss Frances Ryan but they wisely decided to postpone their marriage until his return. Her death preceded his so shortly that they were doubtless both spared the sorrow of parting and now wander together through the Elysian fields with their studious minds studying the mysteries and beauties of the universe. Two families are left equally to share their sorrows.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Porter, of Delhi and an aged grandmother, Mr. E. E. Noble, of Strawberry Point, he leaves many relatives and sorrowing friends.
