H. W. Graves
Henry W. Graves was born November 7th 1841, in Bellevue, Jackson county, Iowa, and was the 2nd white child born in this state. At the age of 8 years he came to this county with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Graves, and settled on a farm in Colony township. On the 17th of December 1866, he was united in marriage with Nancy E. Cuppett. They lived on a farm in Richland township until 1887, when they moved to Edgewood. One year later they moved to Colesburg where they lived eleven years. They came to Manchester in 1899 and have since resided here.
Mr. Graves has been in ill health the past several months and on the 10th of August went to Dubuque to be operated on for Bright's disease. He never really recovered from the operation and was brought home the first of this month in a semi-conscious condition. On, Saturday, October 20th at 6:05 a.m. he departed this life at his home here.
He is survived by his wife and three children. One daughter, Mrs. Lieulla Adams, died a few years ago. Those remaining are; Mrs. Mary L. Hollibur of Manchester, Mrs Binnie Peck of Greenville, California, and Miss Elizabeth H Graves of Manchester.
The funeral was held Monday, October 28th, from the house, Rev. Wagner officiated there and the Odd Fellows Service was held at the grave.
Mr. Graves had been a member of Colony Lodge I.O.O.F. at Colesburg since he was 21 years of age. He was a true loyal hearted citizen, devoted father and husband and an upright christian man of sterling worth and integrity. He was a member of the official board of the Methodist Episcopel church and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to friend and neighbor. His friends regret his loss sincerely and sympathize deeply with the family in their bereavement.
