Roland Burbridge

Roland Burbridge died at his home in this city last Sunday afternoon after a comparatively short illness. His death was the result of a general breaking down of the system.

Mr. Burbrige was past eighty-six years of age and one of the honest, upright men who came to this county in an early day and helped build up and develop the community in which he lived. He was a modest, unassuming man and one beloved by all who knew him. With him passes a man of sterling worth and upright character and another of Delaware county's pioneers.

Roland Burbridge was born at Chillicothe, Ohio, April 10, 1819. At the age of three he removed with his parents to Indiana where he remained until 1839, when he locate in Michigan. In 1854 he returned to Indiana and in 1866 came to Iowa and settled on a farm two miles south of Greeley. He retired from active work in 1883, and took up his residence in this city where he has since made his home. In 1847, he was united in marriage to Miss Emeline Hoag, at Buchanan, Michigan. Six children were born to them, William H., Frank M., Jennie, Jacob, Fanney B., Noble, and the youngest a boy who died in infancy. Wm. Burbridge died in 1896, and Jennie in early childhood. The widow, and other children survive him.

Mr. Burbridge was the last surviving member of the family of Judge Wm. Burbridge of Crawfordsville, Indiana. The members of the family were, as a rule, very long lived, Mr. Burbridge's grand father having lived to the age of 103 years. Gen Burbridge who was a Union general in the Civil War, was a relative of the deceased.

The funeral was held at the family residence' here yesterday afternoon and interment was made in the Greeley cemetery.
