Richard D. McNeill, 72, of Monticello, and a former resident of Greeley, passed away Monday, March 21, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello. Military honors will be conducted by the Monticello Drill Team. Private family burial will be held at a later date.

Richard was born Aug. 3, 1932, on the family farm in Greeley, Iowa, the son of Percy A. and Opal V. Edmunds McNeill. He married Velma Starr on July 14, 1956, in Edgewood, Iowa. He served his country during the Korean War. He farmed the family farm in Greeley and was a farmhand in Illinois for 11 years. He also farmed in the Anamosa area. He had worked at the Monticello Sale Barn.

He enjoyed life to the fullest, as he enjoyed going camping, traveling, fishing, tractor pulls and going to Mexico to vacation.

He is survived by his wife, Velma; two daughters, Carol (Steven) Saunders of Center Junction, Iowa, and Tina (Patrick Deutmeyer) McNeill of Anamosa, Iowa; two grandchildren, Steven R. (Catherine Nelson) Saunders Jr. and Christopher M. (Angela Meyer) Saunders; a great-granddaughter, Rachel; a sister-in-law, Lillian "Gert" McNeill of Monticello, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald; and a sister, Lillian A. (Susie) Carey.
