Rollen G. Hitchcock
Last Saturday morning shortly after seven o'clock, Rollen G. Hitchcock suffered a paralytic at the home of his son, C.A. Hitchcock at Crookston, Minnesota. A half hour later he lost consciousness and at 11 o'clock the weary spirit departed this life. Death came as a great surprise as Mr. Hitchcock had been as well as usual. He arose at about seven o'clock, and when his son told him to come to the breakfast table he acted queerly. It then developed that the old gentleman could not speak and a physician was hurriedly summoned. When he found the tongue paralyzed and the right side useless, he told the relatives that the end was but a matter of a few hours.
The remains were brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Blair of this city Monday. Funeral services were held from the home this (Tuesday) morning at ten o'clock. Rev. J.F. Black, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of this city officiating. Interment was made at Oakland Cemetery.
The deceased was born in Orleans county, Vermont, October 17, 1823. He moved to Dubuque, Iowa in 1855, and later moved to Delaware county. He was united in marriage with Lucy E. Wilson April 29, 1849. Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock were residents of this county until last year, when they went to Crookston, Minnesota, to make their home. Mrs. Hitchcock preceded her husband in death five weeks ago. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Esther Risher of Otterville, Missouri, Mrs. Julia Martin of Edgewood, Iowa, and C.A. Hitchcock of Crookston, Minnesota.
Mr. Hitchcock was a man respected by all who knew him. Though nearly ninety years of age his mind had been clear and he was comparatively vigorous until recently. He was a member if the Odd Fellows Lodge and had been a church member all his life affiliating with the Methodist church.
The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of their many Delaware county friends.
