Mrs. Anna Powell Meets Horrible Death Near Her Home at Earlville

Mrs. Anna Powell, one of the best known and respected women of Earlville was struck by an east bound freight train at the Main street crossing on ???day night and instantly killed. She was alone at the time and no one witnessed the accident. She had been visiting a friend in south part of town and left for her home at about 9 o'clock. Two trains were approaching at the time and the supposition is that she was watching the one from the east she did not notice the other. Later in the evening her son, who lives close by his mother's home noticed a light in her home. As she was living alone he went in to ascertain if there was any trouble. He searched the house and premises but failing to find her. He became alarmed and informed the neighbors who joined in the search. As the hours passed and she did not return, a public alarm was given. The men and boys of the town then joined in the search. At about 1 o'clock Charles Davey found the lifeless form of Mrs. Powell lying between the park and track half way between the depot and Main street crossing. The body was horribly mutilated.

She was the widow of Martin Powell and was 64 years of age. Mrs. Powell is survived by three children, two sons, William H. of North Fork township and Frank of Earlville, and one daughter, Mary of Dubuque. Mrs. Powell was a noble woman and her tragic death has brought sorrow to the hearts of many friends who sympathize with the relatives in their great sorrow - - Earlville correspondent.
