Norman "Bud" Landers III, 78, died Monday, March 5, 2001, in the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, after an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, United Church of Hopkinton, Presbyterian Sanctuary. Burial: Hopkinton Cemetery, Hopkinton. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Surviving are his wife, Elda; four daughters, Kathleen (Judge Robert) O'Neill of LaJolla, Calif., Candace Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Lee Ann Landers of Naples, Fla., and Lisa Landers of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Ron (Dr. Jill Jorgensen) Hillers, Gary Singer II, Brian Singer, Sean Anderson, Shannon O'Neill, Erin O'Neill and Lacee Landers; a great-granddaughter, Kjersten Hillers; and a stepbrother, Tom (Aloha) Dunlap of Georgetown, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gary Singer I; and a stepsister, Edna Lacy.

Norman Lincoln Landers III was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Norman L. and Mary Jane Smith Landers. He was later adopted by Herman and Lila Dunlap. He graduated from Hopkinton schools in 1940. Bud then attended Lenox College and Iowa State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Bud served in the South Pacific, fighting on Peleliu, Okinawa and Guam. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to farm in the Hopkinton and Delhi area. Norman married Elda E. Wilson on Sept. 7, 1947, at Buck Creek Methodist Church. The couple farmed for 10 years and in 1958, Bud started working as a postal clerk at the Hopkinton Post Office. He later worked as a rural mail carrier out of the Hopkinton Post Office. Bud retired after 27 years with the postal service in 1984. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was confirmed in 1934 and later became an Elder. Bud served on the Maquoketa Valley school board, was past vice commander of Fourth District of the American Legion and was a member of Hopkinton American Legion Post 311. He was an avid sports fan of Maquoketa Valley Wildcats and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved music, his home on Lake Delhi and his family and friends.

A memorial fund has been established.
