Maurice was born Sept. 23, 1930, near Hopkinton, Iowa, at the Kirkwood family home. He was the son of Howard H. and Evah DeShaw Kirkwood. He received his early education in the rural schools and graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1948. Maurice worked at the Sand Springs Creamery as well as farmed for several years. Maurice and Marilyn Marolf were married Jan. 14, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church, Hopkinton, a marriage that lasted over 50 years. Besides farming, Maurice was also a Maquoketa Valley school bus driver for over 42 years. He loved all the sports and drove the varsity football and basketball teams, kept score for basketball and ran the chain at the home football games. Maurice received the Iowa Football Coaches Association Distinguished Service Award in 1995. He also enjoyed working with his son and granddaughter in their tomato business, Kirkwood's Sun Country Produce. He was a longtime member of the Hopkinton Lions Club and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. Maurice loved his family and friends, the Maquoketa Valley School, Iowa Hawkeyes and was a true Match Maker. He touched many lives.

The family strongly suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Maurice Kirkood Memorial Fund.
