John Albert McVay, 89, died early Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton. Burial: Hopkinton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton, where a vigil service begins at 5 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; three daughters, Janet (Barry) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Jim) Martinek of Omaha, Neb., and Barbara (Bill) Burns of Marion; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice (Fay) Loop of Lamont.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Florence Britt.
John Albert McVay was born June 22, 1911, the son of John Cleveland and Lydia Chapman McVay. He received his education in the rural schools near his home. He later started farming with his parents. Albert married Elizabeth Pender on July 8, 1938, in Monticello. The couple farmed in the Hopkinton, Buck Creek and Castle Grove areas. In 1966, they moved to Hopkinton and Albert worked at the Hopkinton Creamery for 10 years until he retired.
Albert's gentle patience and loving spirit will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
