Elizabeth McVay, 89, of Hopkinton, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in Manorcare, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Luke's Catholic Church. Burial: Hopkinton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton, with a Scripture service at 8 p.m.
Surviving are three daughters, Janet (Barry) Smith, Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Jim) Martinek, Omaha, Neb., and Barbara (Bill) Burns, Marion; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Albert McVay; a sister, Mary Dunigan; and a brother, Thomas Pender.
Elizabeth Pender was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Lang Pender. Elizabeth graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Monticello. She then went on to attend Lenox College in Hopkinton. Elizabeth Pender and John Albert McVay were married July 8, 1938, in Monticello. The couple farmed in the Hopkinton, Buck Creek and Castle Grove area. In 1966, the couple moved to Hopkinton. Elizabeth taught school at Buck Creek and later in the Maquoketa Valley School District. She retired from teaching in 1972.
Elizabeth was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, NEA and the Delaware County Historical Society.
In keeping with Elizabeth's love for education, the family requests memorials be made to "Dollars for Scholars."
