Robert Gates, 88, of Hopkinton, died Saturday morning, May 1, 2010, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, at First United Church of Hopkinton, with interment in Hopkinton Cemetery. Cheryl Gates and the Rev. Kim Gates will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Surviving are two daughters, Margaret (Larry) Sheppard, Manchester, and Amy Jo Gates, Monticello; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kimbal (Shirley) Gates, Hopkinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gayle in 2007; and a son, Daniel J. Gates in 1990.

Robert Leslie Gates was born April 18, 1922, at Washington, Iowa, the son of W. Leslie and Edith Marie (Nebergall) Gates. He received his education in the Washington schools, where he graduated in 1941. He continued his education in Oregon, attending a diesel mechanics school. Bob went on to serve in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Robert Gates and Nellie Gayle Davis were married June 18, 1944, in Washington, Iowa. The couple farmed for several years near Washington. They later lived in Kalona, where they operated Gates Implement, a John Deere and Chevrolet dealership, with his father and brother, Kimbal. In 1958, the couple moved to a farm near Hopkinton. They retired from active farming in 1989.
