William "Bill" Murray Jr., 77, of Hopkinton and Lake Delhi, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Jones Regional Medical Center, Anamosa, following a sudden illness. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton. Interment: Hopkinton Cemetery, with military honors. A Scripture service begins at 8 tonight at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Surviving are five children, Ellen Walker, Cedar Rapids, William (Bun) Murray IV and Pat (Jeanette) Murray, both of Hopkinton, Greg Murray, Tempe, Ariz., and Mary Kay (Jeff) Driscoll, Marion; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly (Lloyd) Collmann, Marion, and Virginia (Dick) Kitto, Dubuque; and two brothers, John Murray, Dubuque, and James (Joan) Murray, Jonesville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; and a brother, Robert, and his wife Patty.

William Murray Jr. was born June 20, 1930, in Hopkinton, Iowa, the son of William and Coletta Fiedler Murray Sr. Bill received his education in the Hopkinton Community Schools. He then started a trucking business in 1950. He was called to military service on Jan. 11, 1952, during the Korean conflict. He entered the United States Marine Corps in San Diego, Calif. From San Diego he was transferred to Marine Corps Schools at Quantico, Va., and entered the Infantry Weapons Ordnance Repair School. He was selected to remain as an instructor and spent the rest of his tour at Quantico, obtaining the rank of sergeant.

On Jan. 2, 1952, Bill married Joyce Oescheger at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello. The couple raised their five children in Hopkinton, where Bill operated Bill Murray Grain Service. Bill and Joyce were divorced in 1969.

Bill married Patty Hall VanDerveer on Feb. 11, 1970, in Galena, Ill. The couple lived at Lake Delhi and wintered in Mesa, Ariz. Bill retired and sold the business in 1991 to his sons Bun and Pat. Patty preceded him in death on June 14, 2001.

He was a member of the Hopkinton American Legion and was a past commander. He had also belonged to the Knights of Columbus.
