DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Alvin L. Schlichte, 84, of Dyersville, died Friday, May 1, 2009, at Oak Crest Manor, Dyersville, after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Phil Kruse officiating and Deacon Vince Drees concelebrating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 2 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1924, in New Vienna, son of John B. and Anna (Willenbring) Schlichte. He married Mildred Klosterman on May 20, 1948, in Petersburg. Together they farmed near New Vienna/Bankston, until moving to Dyersville in 1987.

Alvin drove a school bus for the Western Dubuque School District until retiring in 2004.

Alvin enjoyed farming, fishing, bowling, cards and his morning coffee at Hardee's. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their various activities and sporting events.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred; his children, Kathy (Marty) Helle, Dianne (Ted) Kluesner, Deb (Loras) Digmann, John (Kelly) Schlichte, Ann (Todd) Kelleher and Jeff (Teresa) Schlichte, all of Dubuque, Dan (Mary) Schlichte, of Cedar Rapids, Margie (Don) Ament, of Dyersville, Jim (Susie) Schlichte, of Farley, and Pat (Donna) Schlichte, of Hopkinton; 23 grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) Smith, Chris (Michelle) Helle, Nick Helle, Greg (Ally) Schlichte, Brad and Tim Schlichte, Jamie (Chad) Saville, Nicole (Joe) Schmitt, Megan (Pete) Freiburger, Katie (Tony) Gerdis, Ellie Ament, Jill (Ben) Anderson, Michael (Jill) Schlichte, Julie Schlichte, Wes (Melissa Benedetto) Digmann, Jonathon and Steven Digmann, Lauren and Emily Kelleher, Kelsey and Karley Schlichte, Natalie and Aubrey Schlichte; three stepgrandchildren, Jason (Maria) Millage, Jill (Kevin) Luders and Jerry (Bonnie) Thompson; 13 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Schlichte, of Dyersville, and Bernard (Ardella) Schlichte, of Colesburg; a sister, Verna Klostermann, of Dyersville; a sister-in-law, Alma Schlichte-Willenborg, of Dyersville; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Zita Lansing, Helen Wessels, Dorothy Olberding, Walter Klostermann, Jenny Conrad, Donna Juran and Sister Marian Klosterman, OSF.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Jeremy Helle and T.J. Kelleher; two brothers, Clarence and Elmer Schlichte; a sister, Lorraine Pins; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Julia Schlichte, Germaine Schlichte, Mark Pins, Art Klostermann, Tony Willenborg, Everett and Bernice Klosterman, Clement Lansing, Charles Wessels, Allie Olberding, Irvin Conrad, Helen Klosterman and Bob Juran.
