DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- LaVerne H. "Mish" Schaetzle, 95, of Dyersville, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Heritage Manor, Dubuque, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at4 p.m. and an American Legion Service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1913, in New Vienna, son of Henry T. and Mary O. (Hoefer) Schaetzle. He graduated from St. Boniface High School in New Vienna with the Class of 1932.

He served his country in the Army during World War II in the Central Europe Campaign from February 1942 until November 1945, earning a Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.

He married Mary M. Loes on Feb. 2, 1944, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville; she preceded him in death in 2006.

Mish was an auto mechanic, working with McGowan and Oehrle Ford prior to the war. After the war, he returned to Dyersville, working for Hogan Motor Co. and retired from Tauke Motors after 38 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 137 for over 62 consecutive years.

He enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors, telling his favorite story about how he earned his nickname.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois (Ed Pesyna) Schaetzle, of Denver, Colo., and Jane (Jim) Niehaus, of New Vienna; a son, James (Linda) Schaetzle, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Michelle Niehaus and Tony (Angie) Niehaus, both of Fort Worth, Texas, Shawn Niehaus, of Chicago, Brian (Tiphanie) Schaetzle, of Cedar Falls, and Katie Schaetzle, of Dubuque; four great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Josiah Schaetzle, and Jenna and Zach Niehaus; a sister, Lucille Stephens, of Davenport; and three sisters-in-law, Joy Schaetzle, of New Vienna, and Lorraine Schuster and Clarabelle Baum, both of Dyersville.

He also was preceded in death by four siblings, Louis Schaetzle, Julien Schaetzle, Laura Blamey and Virginia Schaetzle.
