Kyle (Howard) FAUST, 26, Lost in Typhoon
Manchester, Ia. – Mrs. Luella Faust Sunday has received word from the Navy Department that her son, Chief Petty Officer Kyle Faust, 26, formerly of Manchester, has been reported missing (315 Crewmen) in action since Dec. (18) 28 (1944) in the typhoon which resulted in the sinking of the destroyer Spence, on which he had been on duty since 1943.
If Faust’s death is confirmed (body never recovered), it will mark the second casualty among the first six youths to enlist in the Navy from Manchester in April 1938. Maurice, son of Charles Curray of this city, was killed on the cruiser Vincennes in 1942.
The others to enlist were Freddie Arnold, John Sly, Robert Morrissey, and Maynard May.
Faust’s first training was at Great Lakes, Ill. He was transferred from there to the Pacific area, and went aboard the battleship California. He later saw service on the destroyer Sly, and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor was transferred to the east coast. He convoyed in the eastern theater until 1943, when he went aboard the new destroyer, Spence.
Faust’s last letter to his mother here was received by her November 29 (1944). He visited her last November. His sister, Miss Vera (Ruth), is on duty as a Wave.
